2007 Annual Report
WaterWorks 2011, the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Water and Wastewater Capital Improvement Program, operated at the peak of construction during 2007 in repairing, replacing and upgrading the City’s utilities infrastructure. During 2007, 26 new construction projects started under
WaterWorks 2011 to total $105 million in activity; coupled with existing projects, the program reach more than $250 million under management at year’s end. New 2007 projects included sewer and water main installations as well as pump station rehabilitation and new construction. In addition to new start-up projects,
WaterWorks 2011 continued to make significant advancements in completing existing projects by 2011, the City’s 100th Anniversary. Such projects include wellfield upgrades at the Peele Dixie Water Treatment Plant, rehabilitation projects at Fiveash Water Treatment Plant and pumping system projects at George T. Lohmeyer Wastewater Treatment Plant. As a result of much construction activity,
WaterWorks 2011 ended 2007 at 60 percent of total project completion.
Summary of Accomplishments
• Since inception,
WaterWorks 2011 completed 146 projects worth $230 million.
• The program ended the year with 47 active construction projects throughout the City.
• Several areas were certified to connect to the new sewer system during 2007; these areas were Sewer Area 11 (Sailboat Bend), Sewer Area 3 Basin A (Lauderdale West/Sunset Civic/Davie Boulevard), Sewer Area 5 Basin B (Shady Banks), Sewer Area 13 Basin C (Progresso) and Sewer Area 4 Basin F (River Run).
• There were 1972 sewer connections made available City-wide during 2007, increasing the total number of available connections to 3,376 since the beginning of the program.
• External fiscal and operational audit reaffirmed strong program management of
WaterWorks 2011, the largest capital improvement program in the City’s history.
Community Recognition
WaterWorks 2011 was recognized by the Southwest Coalition of Civic Associations along with many merchants along Davie Boulevard (Districts 3 and 4) during the Grand Re-opening of Davie Boulevard in November. The celebration marked the end of significant
WaterWorks 2011 construction activity in the area as merchants prepared to kick-off of the holiday shopping season.
WaterWorks staff worked closely with the organizers in sponsoring the event and hosted a Business Tool Kit Series to help merchants market their business during and after the event. Florida Atlantic University Small Business Development Center, SCORE and Small Business Administration were part of the series.
