Sewer Connection Process

As part of the City of Fort Lauderdale’s WaterWorks 2011 program, the City is installing new sanitary sewer systems that will bring the City’s neighborhoods up to modern standards for wastewater collection, eliminating the need for septic tanks and further protecting the ground water supply.

In order to connect your property to the new sewer system, information regarding the location of your existing septic tank is needed. This will provide for the most convenient and economical connection from your existing plumbing to the new sanitary sewer system in the street.  A pipe, referred to as a “sewer lateral,” will be extended from the new sewer main in the center of the street to your property line, preferably at a location closest to your septic tank.  Once the new sewer system is completed, it will then be the property owner’s responsibility to make arrangements to have his or her building’s waste pipe connected to the new sewer lateral.

In order for the City to design the sewer improvements in an economical manner for property owners, each property owner will be asked to complete and return a Sewer Lateral Questionnaire. These questionnaires were sent in the mail. Your response enables us to minimize project costs as well as your future connection costs.

If you know the location of the septic tank and/or “clean-out” on your property, or if you have a drawing that shows these items, you will be asked to sketch their location on the questionnaire or attach a copy of your drawing. Please be sure to show your driveway location and desired sewer lateral location as well as any large trees or landscaping that cannot be moved when installing your pipe.

If you are unable to locate these items, do not panic!  Return the questionnaire with a note indicating that you need assistance. Please include information on how we may contact you.

Return the questionnaire using the self-stamped envelope provided by the date specified in the letter you will receive. Be sure to include your contact information requested in the form. If we do not hear from you or cannot contact you, your service lateral may not be located in the most economical location for your property.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the WaterWorks 2011 Call Center at (954) 522-2604.
